If you drill in Kassel’s city center, at one kilometer you find “Zechstein”. It is a salt that stems from this dept and has its origin in a geological time called Perm.
With the Rural School of Economics we learned about the local landscape and made drawings during last summer, and our advisors were Heiner Range and Alexa Matovelle. In 2022 Conny Kurz, geologist at Ottoneum - Kassel’s Naturkundemuseum - helped us to make drawings in the style of geological notes, and
to trace Kassel’s geology.
The drawings make an animation called “Der vertikale Erdkilometer” and it shows 260 000 000 years of moving layers that make the land where Lumbung documenta took stage. It is inspired by the work of Walter de Maria with the same name, made in 1976-77 in front of the Fridericianum Museum in Kassel.Geological walks of 1 kilometer led by Wapke Feenstra were part of the lumbung program and started on top of the work of Walter the Maria.

The product was sold during documenta fifteen, at Lumbung Kios located in Hübner-Areal venue. We exhibited and sold rural objects, creations and artworks that tell local stories from areas around Kassel about our local partners. And goods from our visiting Rural School of Economics network, that came to documenta with trade in their suitcase.
